Once a man was walking along a beach. The sun was shining and it was a beautiful day. Off in the distance he could see a little boy going back and forth between the surf’s edge and the beach. Back and forth this boy went. As the man approached, he could see that there were thousands of starfish stranded on the sand as a result of the tide. And the little boy picked one starfish at a time and threw it back into the surf.
The man was struck by the apparent futility of the task. There were far too many starfish. Many of them were sure to perish.
He went to the little boy and said: “You must be crazy. There are miles of beach covered with starfish. Your effort is not going to make any difference.” The boy looked at the man. He then stooped down, picked up one more starfish and as he threw it back into the ocean, he said, “It will sure make a difference to this one!”
